Getting to the Faculty

The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies is only about seven minutes’ walk from Redfern Station. It is just three kilometres from the city centre and is on direct bus routes.

Accommodation near the University
On-campus accommodation is available in 10 colleges and halls of residence. Colleges operate independently, and applications for accommodation must be made to them directly. On average, the cost of college accommodation is about $195 per week. The University is also surrounded by large rental areas where many students live: sharing houses or flats, boarding in private homes, in hostels or in boarding houses. Weekly rents are typically $75 to $140 to share a house, $80–$150 for a flatette, before food, gas, electricity and telephone costs (allow at least $50 for these). Weekly costs for full-board hostels near the University range from $100 to $190. The University’s Accommodation Service can help students to find accommodation.

International Students Clubs
Many overseas students – from countries such as China, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, Croatia, Egypt, Greece, Lebanon and Serbia, and from Oceania – have formed clubs to help each other to settle into university and Australian life.

University Life
Because the University of Sydney is one of Australia’s largest universities, it has a huge range of activities for students; from acting and debating to sky diving and surfboarding.

Engineering students have a very active association which holds regular barbecues, an annual ball and one of the University’s four annual stage revues. Although an engineering degree requires up to 24 contact hours per week students still find time to enjoy the university’s facilities, including the state of the art sports complex and the Union building.
