Space engineering is an exciting new 21st Century discipline underlying the exploration and conquest of nature's most unforgiving environment.

Combining key areas including orbital mechanics, space vehicles, ground station infrastructure, space avionics and space robotics, the space engineering specialisation at the University of Sydney is the only degree of its kind offered in Australia.

We offer an exciting range of space engineering programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.


At undergraduate level, we offer a space major for students undertaking the four-year Bachelor of Engineering Honours with a specialisation in space within the aeronautical, mechanical or mechatronic engineering.

A five-year combined degree program incorporating science, project management, commerce, arts, medical science, music or law is also available. The combined science degree with a major in physics or computer science is popular option for those looking to expand both their knowledge base and employment opportunities.

Our undergraduate programs are accredited by Engineers Australia.

At the postgraduate level we offer coursework programs as part of the Master of Professional Engineering. We also offer research programs leading to the degrees of Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy.

Our areas of research in this field include aircraft design, biomaterials and biomechanics, combustion, computational fluid dynamics, design optimisation, energy production, field robotics, flight mechanics, fluid dynamics, materials and manufacturing, navigation and control, rheology, smart structures, structural mechanics, thermofluids, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) flight systems, and flight control and navigation systems.
