MPE Industrial Experience

An industrial placement is mandatory for students in the Master of Professional Engineering. You will not be eligible to graduate until you have met the requirements of ENGG5217 Industrial Experience:

  • completed an approved 12 week industrial placement
  • sumitted and passed a written report

Getting started...

Finding a placement...

Finding a placement will take some time and effort on your part. Here are some suggestions:

  • a good place to start your search is the Engineering Sydney website which lists companies who have expressed an interest in offering vacation placements.
  • contact the MPE Project Officer, Susan Day, on 9351 9760 or .
  • sign up with Sydney Talent.
  • contact the industrial placement contact person in your School (check with the School Administration office).
  • use your own contacts and networks.
  • contact the Careers Centre if you need help getting your resume into shape or brushing up your job interview skills.
  • if you are an International Student you are able to complete an approved Industrial Placement in your home country.

Once you have found a placement...

  • complete the Industrial Experience Form with the details of your placement.
  • have your placement supervisor sign the form to confirm you have been offered a placement.
  • you must then have your placement approved by the Director of Postgraduate Studies in the School in which you are enrolled.
  • you must return your completed form to the GSE before you commence your placement in order to be covered by the University’s insurance. If your form is incomplete in any way, you may not be covered.

A quick note on insurance...

  • if you undertake unpaid practical experience in Australia or another country and you are not an employee or worker of the organisation for the purposes of Worker’s compensation legislation, the University provides insurance cover including public liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance and personal accident insurance.
  • if you are being paid by the company for your placement, then you are not covered by the university’s insurance policy and should be covered by the company’s policy.

During your placement...

  • should keep a log for the duration of your placement - see the Information Pack.

After your placement...

  • when you have completed your placement hours you should have your placement supervisor sign the Industrial Experience Certificate and submit it with your report.
  • write and submit your report - see the Information Pack.
  • the report is due six weeks after the placement has been completed
  • submit your report directly to the GSE, Room 111, Level 1, Engineering Link Building J13.
