Biographical details

Dr Ali Hadigheh has been working in maintenance and strengthening of infrastructure since 2007. He joined the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Sydney in November 2016.

Research interests

With reliable infrastructure capable of facilitating economic growth, investment in our built environment is growing every year. Nevertheless, many of our built structures are vulnerable to deterioration, damage and loss of functionality due to natural disasters (fires, floods, earthquakes, cyclones, tsunamis), non-environmental factors (industrial pollution, contamination) and other events (terrorist attacks). Dr Ali Hadigheh's research identifies and addresses these vulnerabilities in order to improve the resilience and sustainability of our built environment.

"Due to climate change, structures are being affected by increasingly large-scale and devastating natural disasters, costing many lives as well as billions of dollars. In addition, a large number of our existing structures do not satisfy the requirements of contemporary design standards, so during an emergency they may be vulnerable to structural or non-structural damage and thus loss of functionality.

"Lack of knowledge of these vulnerabilities makes it difficult to make appropriate emergency management plans, which are necessary in order to be prepared and enable the community to resume functionality as soon as possible after the event. My research helps to achieve this goal by optimising rehabilitation for post-disaster functionality of infrastructure.

"I draw on cross-disciplinary themes to implement new and innovative materials and techniques in order to provide safer, more durable and less resource-intensive infrastructure. Specific areas of focus include the maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of existing structures; the structural applications of composite materials (including fibre-reinforced polymer, or FRP); the durability and fracture mechanism of interface in composite structures; experimental/numerical assessment of buildings under dynamic loads; and the development of an integrated framework for assessing the disaster resilience of infrastructure by optimising strengthening techniques.

"I have always been captivated by the problem of finding the optimal solution for the restoration of a deteriorated structure. It requires a sound understanding of the existing structure's condition as well as a wide-ranging knowledge of feasible rehabilitation methods.

"I have been involved in industrial and research projects on the maintenance and strengthening of infrastructure for more than a decade. What I have learned from my research is to always look back at the fundamental laws. Engineering is about applying solid mathematical principles in the real world to solve problems, design and build things.

I believe that joining the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Sydney will assist me to achieve my goal, which is to provide safer and more resilient infrastructure for the use of the community."
