Dr Amirali Ebrahimi Ghadi joined the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in 2017.

Research interests

Dr Amirali Ebrahimi Ghadi's research in the related fields of industrial waste remediation and long-term carbon dioxide sequestration takes a two-pronged approach to addressing the ever-increasing problem of industrial waste. It seeks not only to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions associated with such waste but also to convert the waste itself into valuable and sustainable products for reuse within industry.

"My passion is to develop sustainable technologies and solutions that mitigate the adverse effects of greenhouse gas emissions and large-scale industrial waste on climate change, and on our ecological system more broadly.

"In particular, my research aims to enable the long-term storage and reuse of industrial waste, such as fly ash from coal power plants, steel slag from blast furnaces, rice husks from the agricultural sector, non-recyclable glass, and mine tailings from the mining industry.

"The process of carbonation can capture and permanently 'lock up' the carbon dioxide emitted by fossil fuel power plants and the cement industry in the form of environmentally benign carbonates. These carbonates can then be used elsewhere in industry, such as in the production of green composite concrete to partly or even completely replace the less sustainable Portland cement currently used.

"I am also working on producing food-grade porous carriers based on carbohydrate sugars such as lactose and mannitol. These biocompatible alternatives to conventional inorganic porous carriers in the pharmaceutical and food industries can then be for the encapsulation of active ingredients for drug or nutrient delivery purposes.

"I have been working in this field since 2012, and completed my PhD in Chemical Engineering in 2016 at the University of Sydney in 2016. My journey with the University of Sydney is still continuing, as I began my career as an academic with the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in 2017.

"I feel fortunate that I have been given a unique opportunity to grow and gain the full benefits of the nurturing environment, excellent mentors and state-of-the art research facilities provided by this university."
