Biographical details

Dr Andre Kyme has been researching the core enabling technologies for novel applications in biomedical imaging for more than 15 years.

He is a member of the Physics and biomodelling research team and the Brain and Mind Centre.

Research interests

Imaging technologies are pervasive in our lives, from the camera on our smartphone to the MRI system capable of showing the structure of our brain in exquisite detail. Dr Andre Kyme is developing new and improved applications of these technologies within the field of biomedical engineering, enhancing our knowledge of living tissues and thus enabling a diverse range of benefits to society.

"Biomedical imaging technologies are immensely useful, allowing us to study the structure and function of tissues in living things, often non-invasively and dynamically over time.

"My research aims to take existing biomedical imaging technologies and either apply them in completely new areas or dramatically extend their usefulness in current applications. I'm also interested in applying biomedical imaging principles to applications well outside biomedical engineering.

"Some of the applications I'm currently working on include motion-compensated brain imaging, especially for children and for people with illnesses that affect their control of movement; imaging the brains of animals as they move about and respond to stimuli, thereby uncovering links between brain function and behaviour; and using imaging to better understand how plants regulate the transport of salt, to inform the development of salt-tolerant crops.

"My overarching goal is to develop the core enabling technologies for novel applications in biomedical imaging that bring real benefit to society. I love to do this by combining the developments from multiple disciplines in clever, innovative ways. In the process I hope to reduce the gap between disparate disciplines and open up new areas of research.

"I've been working in biomedical imaging since 2001, and joined the University of Sydney in 2006. The University has superb expertise and infrastructure in many of the areas that intersect with my research, including neuroimaging, behavioural neuroscience, robotics, computational modelling, computer vision and instrumentation development."
