Research interests

The internet of things (IoT) is an emerging technology that is expected to seamlessly connect billions of physical objects through the internet, profoundly affecting our lives with applications including smart homes, cities, energy grids, transport networks and health systems. Dr Wei Li's research focuses on some of the technologies that will enable the IoT and significantly enhance its energy efficiency, including wireless sensor networks, edge computing and real-time data analytics.

"The IoT is a way of bringing the digital world and the physical world together. In the past there was always a divide between the two, since field data were not integrated into the information system. With the IoT, data are integrated in real time - connected objects are immediately linked, in a ready-to-use state, to the information system - which offers a host of new opportunities for all of us, especially in terms of creating new services.

"Energy management strategies are important for the sustainable development of the IoT. Unlike energy management in traditional networks, IoT energy management faces serious challenges as a result of the IoT features of ubiquitous sensing, networking and computing. Thus, extra technical issues must be addressed for effective IoT energy management, and this is one of my areas of research.

"Sustainably lowering the carbon footprint of edge computing systems requires not only reducing power consumption but also using renewable energy as the primary power supply. The ultimate and most ambitious goal of my research is to contribute to a technological solution that will help build a smarter, greener and more sustainable planet, where each useful piece of information that surrounds us can be sampled, collected and analysed to provide efficient monitoring and control of intelligent spaces and management of urban and rural environments, thus mitigating modern problems relating to energy, security, transport and public health.

"I've been working in this field since 2008, and joined the University of Sydney in 2015. The University provides an excellent environment for me to conduct my research."
