Biographical details

Professor Yuan Chen received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Tsinghua University in China, and a PhD from Yale University in the United States. He was at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore from 2005 to 2015. He joined the University of Sydney in 2015. He received the Australian Research Council Future Fellowship (Level 3) in 2016, an Excellence in Review Award from Carbon in 2015, a Young Scientist Award from the Singapore National Academy of Science in 2011, a Tan Chin Tuan Exchange Fellowship in Engineering in 2010, and JSPS exchange award in 2009. He is currently serving as an editor for Carbon (impact factor 6.337) and Nanomaterials (impact factor 3.553). He also serves as Chair for Australian Carbon Society and Asian Association of Carbon Groups since August 2017.

Research interests

Professor Yuan Chen’s research aims to translate the superior properties of carbon nanomaterials into applications that will ensure a sustainable future for humankind.

“Throughout history, the materials we have used have largely defined our quality of life – from stone, bronze and iron to metal alloys, silicon and plastics.

“Over the past 20 years, carbon nanomaterials have been discovered to possess many fascinating properties that differ significantly from other materials. For example, a tiny, single-walled carbon nanotube with a diameter of less than one ten-thousandth of human hair has electrical conductivity more than 1000 times greater than that of copper, while a two-dimensional atomic-scale layer of graphene is the strongest material ever tested.

“As a chemical engineer, I want to develop scalable chemical processes to translate these properties into practical applications with minimal environmental and health risks.

“One particularly exciting example is the development of a new generation of wearable devices. We already have clothing and accessories – from wristbands and glasses to implanted devices – that incorporate computer and advanced electronic techniques designed to augment our natural abilities to adapt to and control our environment, and such technology is undergoing rapid development.

“My research aims to find efficient energy solutions for such wearable devices. This will lead to applications such as clothing that can power medical devices for people with particular health conditions; space-saving power sources and energy storage for medical implants; and communications devices for soldiers in the field.

“I am also working on controlling the structure of single-walled carbon nanotubes for a new generation of smaller and faster electronics; creating novel carbon nanomaterial-based antibacterial materials for medical applications and water treatment; synthesising carbon catalysts for efficient energy conversion; and designing carbon sorption materials for solid-phase extraction of valuable products in renewable biofuels.

“I’ve been working with carbon nanomaterials since 2002, and I joined the University of Sydney in 2015. The University offers me great academic freedom and a fantastic multidisciplinary research environment to develop my intellectual ability and creativity. I hope my research here can make some important contributions to converting the superior properties of carbon nanomaterials into impactful applications that can create a more sustainable future for humankind.”
