Unit of Study Database Project

The project builds on the framework established by the Faculty's earlier intranet database and aims to provide streamlined management of unit of study information plus improved mapping of links between unit learning outcomes, assessment tasks, overall course objectives and generic graduate attributes.

The project has been engaged with three main tasks since it began

  1. Adaptation of JIRA issue tracking software as UoS information repository. This required firstly developing a standard UoS outline covering essential information needs and compatible with current outlines in use and then implementation and testing on the JIRA. The experience led to the conclusion that software other than JIRA and a simpler more tightly focused UoS design would be necessary to keep the initial data entry on a manageable scale. Initial work with JIRA and UoS outline structure is documented on the JIRA trial page.
  2. Development of design proposal for new Unit of Study interface. Another system outside of JIRA needed to be developed for editing and display of UoS data. Details on the Proposed design page.
  3. Mapping of generic graduate and professional attributes of engineering degrees for integration into UoS outlines. The primary reference on generic attributes for engineering degrees is the Engineers Australia Stage 1 Professional Competencies list. The complex structure of the competencies list was simplified so that it could fit into a simple look up table that could be easily linked to the Unit of Study outline interface. Documented on the Generic attributes page.
